Facebook is considering open sourcing at least one of its C++ libraries. Facebook uses C++ heavily on its back-end systems. This is of course for performance reasons. Facebook obviously cares more about its back-end than its front-end, which means its C++ code must be pristine, at least when compared to its PHP code. If you want to learn even more about how Facebook uses C++, you should also read “HipHop for PHP: Move Fast” on Facebook Developers.

The study also noted the growing support behind the Blackberry and Windows Phone platforms, which could see the mobile market become even more competitive, as developers explore opportunities across all systems.
In more bad news for Apple, a study by IHS iSuppli last week concluded that Windows Phone could overtake iOS in terms of market share by 2015, thanks in part to Microsoft’s deal with Nokia.
