Facebook uses C++ heavily on its back-end systems. This is of course for performance reasons. Facebook obviously cares more about its back-end than its front-end, which means its C++ code must be pristine, at least when compared to its PHP code. If you want to learn even more about how Facebook uses C++, you should also read “HipHop for PHP: Move Fast” on Facebook Developers.

Seems like the FBI is winning

After legal action against file-sharing sites Megaupload and The Pirate Bay BTJunkie one of the 5 biggest torrent indexing site has voluntary shut down.

The site was never involved in any legal action, and to keep it this way the site’s operators decided to shut the site down for good today. The following message was posted on the BTjunkie homepage a few minutes ago:

“This is the end of the line my friends. The decision does not come easy, but we’ve decided to voluntarily shut down. We’ve been fighting for years for your right to communicate, but it’s time to move on. It’s been an experience of a lifetime, we wish you all the best!”

Piracy will never die!

Piracy will never die!:
This guy nailed it!

ACTA SOPA & the rest!

ACTA SOPA & the rest!:
Great read for those who are confused.

Dutch ISPs refuse to block the Pirate Bay

Anti-piracy group BREIN won it’s case against two Dutch ISPs, Ziggo and XS4ALL, forcing them to block access to The Pirate Bay, a file sharing service.

Project Name: Social Network map alert mash-up application

Project Type: Social Media Application

Project Scope: Social media has become a primary source of intelligence because it has become the premier first response to key events and the primal alert to possible developing situations.

Project Requirements:

The application should collect “open source” information.

Provide an automated search and scrape capability of social networks including Facebook and Twitter.

Allow users to create new keyword searches.

Display different levels of threats as alerts on maps, possibly using colour coding to distinguish priority. Google Maps 3D and Yahoo Maps are listed among the “preferred” mapping options.

Plot a wide range of domestic and global terror data.

Immediately translate foreign language tweets into English.

Project Owner: FBI

Are you up for the challenge? Please note next time you write something on Facebook, Twitter, or any other social platform BEWARE, the FBI might be scraping what you’re writing!

Site of the year 2011

Site of the year 2011

Android vs Windows vs iOS

Analyst house Ovum released results from its annual developer survey this week, which suggests that Android could become the most important operating system to developers this year, overtaking iOS’s dominance.

The study also noted the growing support behind the Blackberry and Windows Phone platforms, which could see the mobile market become even more competitive, as developers explore opportunities across all systems.

In more bad news for Apple, a study by IHS iSuppli last week concluded that Windows Phone could overtake iOS in terms of market share by 2015, thanks in part to Microsoft’s deal with Nokia.

Do you think this speculation is way off the mark?

You can try the Google test with your friends.
